BUILDING A BRAND WHILE WORKING TO SAVE THE OCEANS

From the beginning, this partnership proved to be more than just about business. In addition to completely revamping their digital presence, we teamed up with Hexskin to help create The Mangrove Initiative: For every purchase, they would facilitate the planting of two mangrove trees. Mangroves are vital because they help stabilize the coastline ecosystem and prevent erosion. Their growth could now be tied directly to their cause.

This partnership was especially thrilling for us because it gave us the opportunity to work directly with Dave, the founder of Hexskin and the brand's lead product tester. He was a great resource for our team to bounce questions off of when it came to the swimwear, board shorts, and wet suits. 


Our approach with Hexskin was simple: we wanted to match the brand with its audience. The Growth Shark team started by connecting for a complimentary discovery call with Dave and got to work conducting a brand deep-dive to better understand both Hexskin and their top competitors. We learned that their line was inspired by nature and their passion for adventure. Dave had an insightful motto that they like to live by: "Life should be about the experiences that disconnect you from the monotonous."


After thoroughly reviewing their digital assets and infrastructure in place, we wanted to address their email marketing and automation first. We worked with Dave and his team to outline what we wanted to accomplish with the creative (and also what we wanted to stay away from which can be just as vital), the team was able to design an email layout and overall look that better aligned Hexskin with their ideal adrenaline-seeking, premium-quality minded user.


Once the visuals and messaging were agreed upon, it was time to revamp the brand’s email automation including core email marketing flows and build out additional touch points. We like to think of each of these new touch points as additional at-bats (like in baseball and softball) to create something that will resonate with our target audience. 

Before we jumped into the product and collection pages, it was clear that we needed to start with creating core internal pages first that would resonate with users as they explored Hexskin. These pages were their About Us page, Reviews page, Return Policy page, and their newly rebranded Affiliate Program page (above).


Our overall strategy was to test multiple variations and value propositions over time and move their customers from one conversion/conversation funnel to the next. The further they get, the more profitable the customized marketing flow and landing pages would become.


The result were new, expanded looks that enticed users to better understand Hexskin's brand and the benefits of their products.

Email marketing and automation was the next obstacle to tackle. Along with revamping every email flow, we engineered a flow infrastructure that was designed to move users down an email funnel based on their behaviors and actions. In the end, we were able to prioritize Bulldog's most profitable flows and, ultimately, scale out Bulldog's monthly user base with advanced customization and email segmentation.


The team then grew to include a video creator and storytelling specialist, who has also worked with major brands like Chewy and Smirnoff. With the new addition, our team was able to bring the video strategy to life in the areas of website content, engaging video ads, and multiple social media channels. Bulldog's digital presence grew rapidly in addition to boosting their membership subscriptions numbers for both organic and paid campaigns.


While collaborating with Bulldog's Director of Operations, we were also able to incorporate and support social justice and LGBTQX causes. This enabled us to transcend the business-as-usual work environment and champion these crucial issues in an inclusive environment.
